Orlando and St. Augustine, FL {Travel Diary}

This trip was the best vacation! I had such a fun time and though we were busy most of the time it was a refreshing break from life. I was in Florida from May 26th- June 6th.

I wanted to first clarify a few things before I take you on this journey. Our best friends live in Florida and we used to home school with them. Their oldest son was graduating so we came down for that and we stayed and went on a vacation with them.

DISCLAIMER: I’m not trying to brag about this trip or anything like that. I am so thankful I had this opportunity with my family.

Now I can tell you about my trip!

Day 1 (Friday)

Bright and early at 4am we started our 14 hour journey to Florida. It ended up taking us 14 hours the first day. We stopped in Savannah and coincidentally stayed at the same hotel as we did last time we went to Florida again.

We also stopped at South of the Border which if you are going to Florida you must stop there! It is pretty cheesy but the pictures are worth it.

Day 2 (Saturday)

After a delicious continental breakfast we jumped back on the road. We finally made it to our resort (Tropical Palms) at four or five. It was such a nice place and I loved staying there. Our friends own an RV so we all stayed at an RV park, though we stayed in a cottage. Here’s what our cottage looked like.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We unloaded that evening and then we went and saw everyone who was there for the graduation. Many of their family and friends had come to Orlando for Josh’s (the guy graduating) graduation. I loved getting to see some of their extended family again and meeting some other people who had a big part in their lives. That evening we played a game about who knew Josh the best and had a pre-party for him.

alligator

We also went for a walk that evening and saw an alligator!!

Day 3 (Sunday)

gaylord palms

Sunday we went to Josh’s graduation ceremony and then to his party. The ceremony was a home school convention held at the Gay Lord hotel. The ceremony was held the day before Memorial day and the man speaking was fought in the Vietnam war. He was such an amazing speaker!

grad

Later that day, we went to the graduation party. We ate plenty of India food, danced, and listened to Josh, his brothers, and cousins sing and play different instruments. It was a great time and I’ve never danced so much 🙂

Day 4 (Monday)

bev

This day we had the opportunity to meet a woman who my mom lived with while she was teaching in the intercity. We also were able to meet the man (and his family) that introduced my parents to each other! It was a privilege to meet people so influential in my parent’s lives. Plus, we went swimming! I played water football which was different for someone who isn’t a big sport person.

Day 5 (Tuesday)

Tuesday we ended up doing my favorite activity of the week and I conquered one of my fears! We went to Aquatica (Sea World’s water park). This was definitely my families favorite place we went! They had so many fun and refreshing water slides.

^^Breakaway Falls

{via}

I’m not a roller coaster person but I love water slides. There was one that I was terrified of doing. It is called Breakaway falls. You are in a capsule and the floor drops out from under you and you shoot down into a waterside. After a bit of peer pressure, I decided to do it and I ended up going first out of our whole group.

I’m so glad I did it though I would not do it again. I was so surprised as I began dropping the I flung my arms back instead of crossing them over my chest, therefor inhaling a ton of water. All in all it was a great experience though.

I think our favorite all around things were Whala Wave ( a family ride with twists turns and drops) and Rao Rapids (you float around in some fast rapids). I would recommend this completely if you are ever in Florida!

Day 6 (Weechi-Watchee)

weechi-watchee

So many of our friends went to Weechi-Watchee and said it was their favorite part of their vacation. Plus it was a state park so the tickets were inexpensive ($13 for adults/teens and $8 for kids).

It was a natural spring (like where bottled water comes from) and they had shows, a riverboat ride, water slides, and swimming area. It was a really different activity than where we would normally go but it was so cool. It was even worth the two-hour drives (both ways)!

Day 7 (Thursday)

On Thursday we went to the Holy Land. When we entered the park, it looked like we had stepped back in time. We went around and saw different performances and toured replicated buildings. We also went to a place called the scriptorium where we learned all about how the Bible was created and evolved. At the end of our time, Ms. Zuli (Josh’s mom) bought us each cross necklaces from the trip. I wear mine all the time.

We got back from the Holy Land and decided to go night swimming. It was a ton of fun and the RV park had a nice pool. I did realize I was really out of swim shape when we were racing in the pool!

Day 8 (Friday)

Friday we just hung out around the RV park. We swam more, did laundry, packed up, and then all ate dinner together.

Day 9 (Saturday)

bryn mawr

^^Bryn Mawr Ocean Resort, where we stayed for the last part of our trip

Saturday morning we went to the waffle house and met Jon T and Jeff (people our friends had met earlier in the week). They had great customer service. We then hopped in the car and drove two hours to St. Augustine.

In the afternoon, we met Josh’s aunt and 2nd cousins. We had dinner with them.

Day 10 (Sunday)

early morning

^^Look at how tired we were 🙂

Sunday morning at about 6 am we got up to watch the sunrise on the beach. It was so pretty and I got some cute pictures as well.

cute

Sunday we had our own church in the morning and then we spent all day at the beach. I took some pictures and was in the water most of the time. I ended up taking a nap on the beach too.

Day 11 (Monday)

running

Monday was our last full day in Florida. We played some four square in the morning but we tried to get to the beach ASAP.

pit

^^Here we are digging a really deep hole

It started to rain (extremely hard, it hurt) but we stayed out in the waves. I went out pretty far that day. I even went to a sand bar!

story time

^^Listening to Danny tell a story

That evening, we all watched the Princess Bride. I forgot what a great movie that is!

Day 12 (Tuesday)

It was really hard to leave Tuesday and I will admit I cried a little. Before we left, we watched the sunrise and said goodbye to everyone. We drove straight through and arrived home that night at 10 PM.

I had such an awesome time on this trip and it was really refreshing. I am so thankful for the  opportunity to go on this vacation and I know I will remember the trip for the rest of my life.

I want to shout out my mom for taking the majority of these pictures! Otherwise you would only have about 1/4 of the pictures I posted.

Thank you for reading this post! Have you ever been to any of the places I went to? What was your best vacation?

Have a magnificent day!

Having Joy Through Hardships

Right now, I’m sick. It is Good Friday. We have a program at our church but I’m home because I have a very low-grade fever and mainly just feel too tired to go.

About a week ago I began memorizing James 1:5, for a few days I was studying the surrounding passage. It is about having joy during trials and asking God for wisdom on how to be joyful in trials. I posted about joy a few months ago and here I am again. God must be showing me something 😉

Before I continue I want to make a disclaimer and say, yes, I am aware that getting sick is not considered a trial to everyone and definitely not as big as being persecuted for your faith or a family members death.

Right now, this is what I’m struggling with. It feels like a big deal to me because I love the traditions I have with my family at Easter and want to enjoy them. I also am planning on spending spring break at the beach with my friend for her birthday and have really been looking forward to that. None of this will happen if I’m sick, but God has taught me through this.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

In front of people I’ve had a lot more trouble trusting God than by myself. I’ve been praying James 1:5 and I keep giving my worries back to God. It has brought me closer to God. This is teaching me to trust God. He has a plan. He will redeem the bad things that happen in our lives for good.

Your trial is probably different from mine. We all get them at some point or another. God uses everything for His glory, even our mistakes or Satan’s schemes. You are right. I don’t know what you are going through. Yes, I’m sure it is hard not to question God or wonder why this is happening.

Try to give it to Him. I’ve spent more time with God the past few days then I have since the missions trip I went on maybe. It feels good. Spending time with God doesn’t just mean praying and scripture reading, though it can. I’ve been listening to an amazing Spotify playlist of praise music. I’ve been doing some Bible journaling as well. Something I have been praying is that God won’t let me waste this opportunity to serve him.

Whatever kind of struggle you are going through. Look at it as a way to practice joy and pray that God will not let you waste this wonderful opportunity.

Have a fun spring break!

-Rebekah

***UPDATE: I’m better and had a wonderful Easter and I’m at the beach right now.***

My Missions Trip

Okay. Where do I even start with this post?

Well, as you can see by the title I’m talking about the missions trip I went on. I’ve had some requests to post about it. So here I am. I know it has been a few months (a little over three to be exact). So you may be thinking, why now? Well, I found this post completely written and edited sitting in my draft box and wondered why it was never posted. So I am here today to post it. Without explaining further let me just start.

Before I left for the trip I thought I would be journaling often and taking plenty of pictures, when in reality I didn’t. I was way too busy to grab my camera or sit and write. So, I don’t have pictures or journal entries. So this is all from my memory.

Background

Every year my youth group goes on missions trips. They have been going to Maine for almost 20 years.

We drive up, hold a VBS (Vacation Bible School) Monday-Friday and then drive back. They don’t have any other camps throughout the summer in this town, so for most kids this is the highlight of their summer. We hold the VBS at the school and this year we also slept there.

On Wednesday night we hold a carnival with food, games, and a small program.

The day after we arrived home (Sunday) we share something that God taught us and a favorite memory from the trip in front of the church.

Preparation for the trip

VBS Hallways

We started to think about and prepare for the trip in January. I signed up and began sending out support letters. I had to raise $595 to be able to go. I raised the money through asking for donations from people I knew. Our team also had meetings about once a month where we learned more about each other and were taught different ways to share Jesus with the kids.

Since we were volunteering with a VBS we were on different teams (guide team which lead the kids around, crafts, worship, teaching, and 7th-12th team.  The middle and high school were combined and had their own separate group and games).  I was on craft team with two others teens and an adult. We decided what crafts we would create, tested them, and practiced teaching them.

The one other thing I had to do was pack. Everyone is given a giant duffel bag (big enough to fit both my little brothers in) to pack their stuff. We also could bring a bag to carry in the vans (most of us used school backpacks). We slept on air mattresses the whole trip, so we had to pack those as well.

The actual trip!

We had 51 kids show up on the first day for VBS!

Their were 17 teens and 10 adults that went on the missions trip.

Our VBS day consisted of an opening (where we sang the VBS songs and watched a little video skit), then there were four rotations (crafts, games, worship, and Bible). There were four groups PreK and Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th, and 5th and 6th. Then we finished up the morning by singing more songs and talking about the day and what the kids learned.

We ate breakfast and lunch cafeteria food.

It took two full days to drive-each way!

Some favorite memories

I have so many memories! This trip was so awesome and I had such a great time. Ever since I reached home I’ve been missing it. Some of the things listed below are general, while others are more specific.

-I really liked the long car rides to travel there and back. We listened to music or talked.

-I liked that it was sort of like a nine-day sleepover with my friends. We were serving but we also had fun!

-It was amazing to get to bond with people who I didn’t know very well and now I feel like I’ve known them forever.

-Something super special was that my mom was able to come with me on the trip! It was cool to be able to serve along with her.

-I liked watching the kids make their crafts and singing and dancing to the VBS songs at opening and closing programs.

-We would sit outside on a hill and watch the moon come up (after the sun went down) and talk.

-I tried peanut butter and ketchup on a hotdog and it was awesome (you can’t judge it until you’ve tried it!)

There were many more, but that’s all I’ll share for now.

What God taught me

Well, God taught me a lot of things. The two main things that I learned were:

  1. To trust God more. He has a purpose and a plan, even if we can’t see it. He taught me that He is in control, so I don’t need to worry.
  2.  God does answer prayers. There were lots of things I prayed about (including staying physically healthy, having a place to sleep {for a few months leading up to the trip we didn’t have a given location where we were going to sleep}, for the kids to be open to hear about God) and God answered them. I also grew closer to God when we had our devotions, which made the prayers feel even more real.

I went to Maine to serve and teach kids but in a way I was being taught by God in so many ways!

I learned so many different things from the mission trip and not just in relation to my faith. I spent nine days with my peers. We had to bond as a team and learned team work. I was amazed at how even from different backgrounds and being different ages we became unified.

I’m so glad I went and I would really encourage you to pray and ask God if He is calling you to serve! It was such a special time and it encouraged me so much in my relationship with God. I’m so thankful for this experience and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

maine

^^This is my team! Thanks guys for being such an awesome team. It was awesome to work with all of you 😀

I hope that answers everyone’s questions! If you have any more you can comment them and I’ll be sure to answer them.

Have you ever been on a missions trip? Would you like to go on one?

That’s all for this post. Bye 🙂

Did I Complete My ‘Blink’ List?

Hi fellow bloggers.

As you might have read earlier this summer, I posted My Summer ‘Blink’ List. Well now, at the end of the summer, I’m going to update you and show you what I completed and what I didn’t. The things I didn’t complete are in red and the things I did are in green.

————————————————————————

#1 Wake up early and watch the sunrise.

sunrise

^^The actual sunrise (it was really dark because I took this at 5:34 am)

I didn’t think I’d accomplish this but I did! In June, I went on a missions trip to Maine which I talked about in this post. The night we were leaving, I couldn’t sleep very well because I was so excited. So I got up (it was about five) and read my devotions and watched the sunrise. It really got me in the right mind-set and was very calming. It was so special because in my devotions that day, one of the verses was Jeremiah 29:11 which is my favorite verse. I didn’t plan that it just happened! God is so cool 😀

#2 Have a water balloon fight.

I’ve had about five at least this summer. I love water balloon fights and fortunately for me my siblings do too. I still have a few hundred left for next year or in case I need them for something else. *sneaky grin*

#3 Keep a journal.

journal

^^This is my journal.

Yes! I did it. I finally formed a habit of journaling and my first journal is almost filled! I’m so glad that in a few years I can look back on what I wrote. Plus, it can help me remember lots of little things that happened this summer.

#4 Improve my swim times.

I feel like every year my swim times go down and this year is no exception. I also had to swim a 50 butterfly in a meet which is my worst stroke and I had never swum it in a meet before (it was actually fun!).

#5 Have a bonfire with friends.

I didn’t do this, though maybe I’ll do it during the fall :).

#6 Sleep under the stars.

I was planning on doing this with my friends but they couldn’t come over so we didn’t do it :(.

#7 Read 50 hours over the summer.

Well, I only got to 47 which is SO close.

#8 Be a consistent blogger.

I did a horrible job this summer at blogging, but I’m ok with that. I think I needed an extended break and now I’m back and feeling very motivated.

#9 De-clutter my room.

It’s an ongoing process, but yes, I did de-clutter my room this summer.

#10 Reach 100 followers.

I’m not there yet but I’m EXTREMELY close (91 to be exact).

#11 Host a giveaway.

I didn’t get around to this.

#12 Try new Pintrest recipes.

I didn’t make any new recipes except for yesterday. I don’t know if that counts?

#13 Finish some sewing projects.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

My grandma helped me make a doll outfit and she showed me how to make some cute bath puppets that I can make for little kids I know. Right now, my machine is being serviced so I can’t sew for a little while.

#14 Relax

I did manage to relax this summer too. Actually, I did a lot of relaxing when I was home and not out.

The verdict: I completed 1/2 of my goals. I could have done better but I accomplished more of them this summer than I did last year!

When do you go back to school? I am going back today! I’m sad summer is over but excited for a new school year.

Also,  would you like to see a What’s in My Backpack, Homeschool Edition post? If so, let me know in the comments or by using this poll.

I think that’s all for now! Talk to you soon!

I got braces! I’ve had them for almost a month now!

Onto what I got. DISCLAIMER: Other than the doll bag, a gift from my parents, I bought this with my own money.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
AG souvenir t-shirt+ hanger- $10

The first thing I got was the AG place NY souvenir t-shirt. It is so adorable and matches with almost everything! It says AG at the top and has purple, pink, hot pink, red, and white stars.

I give this shirt an A++

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
Purple mini doll carrier- $10

This bag is so pretty! It fits up to two mini dolls. I only have one but the main reason I bought it because it is so spacious.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
really deep and can comfortably hold two minis
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
It can fit about 3 clothing items plus shoes or a lot of accessories
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
elastic straps to hold dolls, could also be used for clothes, shoes, etc.
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
Ruthie inside!

I love this and think it is super cute! Thank you mom and dad for buying this for me:) I would rate this A+

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
School stripes dress and high tops- $28

The school stripes dress is so adorable. I never really wanted it but as soon as I saw it in the store I knew I had to get it:)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
the dress is a grey multi-color striped t-shirt dress with an attached purple long sleeve
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
purple and grey striped high tops that fold down
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
cute peace sign, heart and butterfly design on each side
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
It looks cute with leggings
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
or jeans

My only complaints are that the dress is really short and for two items: a dress and shoes, it shouldn’t be 28 dollars! Over all I rate this an A-

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Lastly, I did end up sending Nikki to the doll hospital for a new head. As soon as she returns I will post her “new” look. Her are some pictures of her leaving 😦
